Improving calcification of marine green algae
ApplyProject Description
The project focuses on the fast-calcifying calcareous green alga Halimeda to better
understand the sequestration capacity in the Red Sea. To quantify the functional role of
Halimeda, the project aims at quantifying Halimeda carbonate versus organic production
rates under controlled conditions in an aquarium setup in the KAUST facilities. The VSRP will
be in charge of running the experiment, controlling the carbonate chemistry and other
parameters during the experimental run, and for analysing the samples. The VSRP might be
involved in taking the specimens from the field, if holding a research diving certificate. A
comprehensive report will round up the VSRP project.
